As Issued : Keep it Simple Show II

Hello pretty people, as some of you may already know, I've been working away on a piece for Kevin Peterson's "Keep it Simple" show- opening this Saturday the 29th of September over at As Issued Gallery/Bookstore in Costa Mesa, California. There will be an artists' reception from 6PM till 10PM if you are so inclined to mingle with the amazing talent that's slated to appear at this event. I'm not so sure if I can make it up there... but who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and hitch a ride up near the city of angels...

For those of you who can't make it to the show,
here's a preview of my final piece, right here, right now
on today's special last minute blog post,
brought to you by yours truly...

Once again, this will be an incredible show
with over twenty incredible artists!

Be there or be square...

Thanks for checking in
and take care until next time!

Some Sneak Peaks and Apologies! : Part IV

This entry concludes my fourth and final installment for the "Sneak Peaks and Apologies" blog series! Wow, September has been quite the repentant month...

Once again, thank for being so patient during the month of August... I definitely tapped out for a little more than thirty-one days and I'm hoping that I can conclude this year with some consistent posting about my tattoo apprenticeship, upcoming shows, super-secret-side-projects, and what not!

The last personal project I wanted to preview for all of you is a series of "Piñata Demons" -a fun little set set of illustrations that debuted with the "Tokyo vs. Portland vs. San Diego Showdown" at Hellion Gallery, in conjunction with Subtext Gallery, for San Diego Comic Con International. That was a great show, by the by, and I hope some of you had a chance to check it out, along with all the other Comic Con goodness going on that week... what a whirlwind that was! -but always worth it in the end.

Anyways... this set of illustrations seems to be developing a story of its own, and I'm hoping to show some images here and there around town with local venues and what not... just a little tease now and again... if you don't mind. But I'm excited to see how this story might end.

This is yet another series born out of my most recent sketchbook and I wasn't expecting anything spectacular from the idea, but as soon as the polished pieces started coming to life, I really fell in love with the characters developing out of the rough outlines on my sketch pad.

Here are a few new friends...

Once again, if all goes according to plan, I'll try to make a small book from this set of images... so please, send some love and patience my way
so I can make this happen!

Thanks for checking in and take care until next time!

Spirit Mask Series I

And now for, yet another, new series of illustrations... yay!

Finally... I'm so happy to bring you the early stages for this new set of drawings, because they've been long overdue... as well as the other projects I've got lined up on my shelf. But anywho, these illustrations were a nice little poetic surprise and I hope something good comes of their unexpected existence.

I may or may not show them individually through the gallery circuit... I may or may not assemble them into a book... My intention is to show a large body of them at a single time at some point and I may or may not post a few more for the "Power in Numbers" project with Gallery Nucleus -so the plans for this work thus far are pretty loose...

In the meantime
(before I figure out how to purvey these little spirit masks to the general public)
you can, at the very least, enjoy their progress...

Thanks for checking in,
and take care until next time...

Some Sneak Peaks and Apologies! : Part III

Here's the third installment to my "Sneak Peaks and Apologies" blog series... hopefully this won't become a habit! Thanks again for all your love and patience,
I appreciate it more than anything!

But now that we're somewhat caught up on the apprenticeship and I've broken the news about the new book coming out in 2013- now I'd like to introduce you to some sneak peaks for a couple of personal projects that have been brewing on the back burner since this year's Comic Con.

Once again, I was really honored to be a part of the non-profit project "Power in Numbers" with Gallery Nucleus and I've decided to continue the "Spirt Mask" series that debuted in their online store/gallery. Initially, the "Spirit Mask" series was something I kept tucked away in my new sketchbook, but this venue seemed like the perfect opportunity to expose the idea. The first piece, "Incandescent Eyelids", has already sold and I intend to finish at least nine more pieces for the "Spirit Mask" series with the intent to continue producing images if I'm still interested in the series by the time this first set of nine is done.

Here are some sneak peaks of my sketches...

If I like this series enough, then I may even assemble the images into a small book, providing I finish enough pieces... but we'll see... most of this is just wishful thinking at the moment- so stay posted for more updates, sneak peaks, sketches and polished images!

Thanks for checking in and take care until next time!

Some Sneak Peaks and Apologies! : Part II

Here's the second installment for my apologetic absence...
Once again, so so so so sorry for playing the MIA card during the Comic Con aftermath... But! -I have so much good news as a result of this year's San Diego Comic Con International. I must say... so happy about how everything turned out... saw some old friends and made some new ones! And I'd like to take a minute to thank everyone who stopped by the booth, chatted and/or purchased something from me... Your love and support means so much and goes so far...

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!
I couldn't do this without you.

So guess what!? Big things are on the way! I was approached by Mr. Alberto Ruiz (purveyor of fine literary eye candy for his labels Brandstudio Press, Trinquétte Publishing and Xupuy Ediciones) and I was asked to contribute my artwork in book format for one of his many labels! So if all goes according to plan and I stay on schedule, I will have a nice new artbook in time for San Diego Comic Con 2013!

Thanks to my new friend and photographer, Tyson Wirtzfeld, I have a whole slew of professionally photographed artwork straight out of my Bic ballpoint pen sketchbooks from 2009 and 2010. Alberto has sent me all the templates for the book layout and, as soon as I have some spare time, I'm going to start designing the new book from cover to cover. I may have enough material for two 48 page books and, if I can swing it, I will try to have two books in time for Comic Con 2013- but at the very least there shall be one!

So please send some good vibes & cross your fingers for me!
Here are some sneak peaks for the upcoming books...

I was also lucky enough to land an interview with Verbicide Magazine. Check out the video below if you have some time and would like to watch a three minute video of yours truly.

Bizarre Magazine Issue #181 : Dark Art Interview with Bob Self

Presenting one of my first interviews!

This little number was in conjunction with Mr. Bob Self -a man of many talents and tastes. He's not only the president and publisher of Baby Tattoo Books, he's a fantastic writer and occasional organizer of the ever-so-popular Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School events in and around California.

I was pretty honored to be chosen for one of Bob's final "Dark Art" interviews, appearing in the UK's most popular fetish periodical Bizarre Magazine -issue #181 back in 2011. It was a lot of fun working with him, and I got to show a side of myself that people don't normally see on a regular basis.

So here's the interview, transcribed by yours truly, in its entirety.
Please enjoy!

ALL BRANNOCK

Get some arty fibre inside ya and keep your mind irregular –
enjoy a bowlful of Katherine Brannock’s
ballpoint drawings of animal-headed girls

Sometimes dark art appears in the most brightly-lit places. In the case of Katherine Brannock’s work, one of her big-titted, jumpsuit-clad, gun-toting, crow-headed (but not bird-brained) drawings found its way to me under the glaring fluorescent lights of the “Nerd Prom”, officially known as San Diego Comic-Con. Out of 130,000 convention-goers, Brannock’s beaked babe made the most lasting impression on me, even though she only exists as wank-worthy ink on paper.

MYSTERIOUS GIRL

The creatures in Brannock’s drawings are enigmatic, but the artist is even more so. I didn’t see Brannock at the Con, so I chatted with her via email, and learned that it’s hard (perhaps impossible) to get a straight answer from her. For example, when I asked if she was popular at school, Brannock said: “I could always draw as many friends as I needed at any given moment, so according to my records, I was the most popular girl in the multiverse.” And when asked if her paintings are self-portraits, she said: “Only the images that are vacantly opinionated, with a dash of complacent pretentiousness.”
Some of the personal revelations she makes (or doesn’t) aren’t just double-talk, they’re infinite-loop-talk. Her favorite animal? “Animal magnetism.” Her least favorite animal? “Animal instincts.” Does she like to dress up in zoomorphic costumes? “If I had the money, most of my time might be spent elaborately camouflaging myself, in which case you wouldn’t have been able to find me or my artwork.”
Hmph. Maybe Brannock doesn’t really exist. Her CV states that she worked as a graphic designer for the US Marine Corps, but her evasiveness suggests she might just be a phantom created by the American military for some sort of covert purpose. When I ask how her gig with the soldiers affected her personal artworks, she’s a little more direct for once, stating ominously, “They intimidated it, then harassed it, and eventually broke its spirit.” I don’t think I agree; her current work looks pretty kick-ass to me.

BLACK SHEEP

The only piece of information Brannock shares with me that appears to be true is that she attended a Catholic school in San Diego nicknamed “The Barfing Lamb”. “There was a statue on the school’s front lawn depicting Jesus and some sheep, but one of the lambs was supported by a piece of white plaster that ran from its mouth to the ground,” she explains. “From across the street, it looked like the lamb was vomiting.”
I thought I might make a trip to San Diego to confirm this story, and discover whether I’d achieved the impossible task of extracting a fact from Brannock about herself… but alas, the artist informed me that the site has been paved over to create a car park. That’s how Brannock rolls: she’s all mystery, myth, and witty diversions.
One thing I do know is that she gets through a lot of BiC ballpoint pens while creating her illustrations. How am I so sure? A little, big-titted birdie told me.

Thank you Bob!
And thanks for checking in,
take care until next time...

Some Sneak Peaks and Apologies! : Part I

Ok ok ok, so so so so sorry for the lag ladies and gentlemen... I've been working away like crazy with Cooper for the tattoo apprenticeship and I must say, things are moving along rather nicely. I'm so excited and humbled by the fact that I get to learn among so many amazing artists here at Guru Tattoo

The awesomeness is a little overwhelming at times, but once I place my feet back on the ground I remember I've still got a long way to go... but there is a light at the end of the tunnel... I promise! And if all goes according to plan, I will be able to start taking names for some free apprentice tattoos by the Winter of 2012/Spring of 2013 for any and all who are interested!

In the meantime, check out some of my sketches from Cooper's latest assignments... I will definitely post more images in my blog series "Tattoo Apprenticeship"... so check that out as well... it also includes a little more info about my apprenticeship, tattoos and tattooing.

But if that isn't enough for you, you can always check me out Instagram (@katherinebrannock) for more pictures and musings during my time in and around Guru Tattoo and/or the rest of the world...
